I was all about some Talk Like a Pirate Day in past years. It was a subculture celebration. An in-joke. Here's where I start to sound elitist: But like anything terribly clever, or so unclever that it's polarity flips it from fail to win, the moment you hear this shit on NPR (public radio, for ya'll overseas), or see it on the nightly news, it really starts to lose it's lulz. Now then, rather than being a geek-snob and saying internet memes shouldn't cross real-world boundaries to be embraced by those hethens who actually go outside, I'll just say redundancy can kill humor in a heartbeat. So rather than wink-wink-nudge booty jokes, it's at risk of being dilluted into a kind of broad, stale, social retardation for one day a year. Since trendy news likes keeping it's thumb on last year's internet pulse (as current as they can manage) I sense the bastardization of another classic meme is upon us. However, one cool thing about such a broad, networked culture is there's always something fresh in the outskirts. What will 2007's LOLCATs be? — comment — |
