Planets and Colonies

A collection of mini-articles about the planets, moons and colonies in the Anatali Universe

Inner Solar System

Sol   (System)  —  The name of our native solar system which includes our sun (Sol) and Earth. This official name was required to erase ambiguity. 'Solar system' also refers to the Sol System, where 'star system' is used for other groups of suns and planets in the galaxy.

Venus  —  A cursed, unfortunate planet. Initially colonized and terraformed for mining and farming, the Jensen-Almay disaster and Apocalypse Eternal wiped out the human population and progress that had been made. Currently Venus has been resettled for its valuable resources, though its colonists are plagued by mutation, radiation poisoning and dark energy anomalies such as phantoms and Dvoraks.

Earth  —  Birthplace of all known intelligent life, Earth was stripped of its resources and named an environmental sanctuary by the Sol-Union. Its population has slowly declined to two billion as of the 4125 census. At this point most of its residents are too poor to escape to greener pastures, though many powerful nations and corporations still influence humanity's direction from this ancient homeland. While Earth is in no danger of destruction or becoming abandoned, its charm has waned for those who seek true advancement.

Moon, The  —  The Earth's baby sister has seen its share of hardships over the millennia. Though classically neutral, the Moon is devoid of resources and atmosphere, and remains reliant on Earth. With a highly religious population, the Moon holds the largest concentration of Dethists, Christians, Hindus and Muslims among all colonies and planets. Peaceful co-existence among fellow Lunars is easy; with foreign nations, not so much.

Mars  — The first planet to be colonized, people have lived on Mars' surface for fifteen hundred years, granting it an amazing and independent wealth of history and heritage. Most residents consider themselves more Martian than Earthling and they've a right to do so. There've been no major conflicts or disasters on the red planet, giving it a classic reputation for peace and prosperity. It's the Sol-Union's Capital and the center of humanity's commerce, industry and art.

Jupiter

Io  —  Jupiter's unstable, volcanic moon is as inhospitable as Mercury in environment, though its political atmosphere is far more deadly. An independent military monarchy has controlled Io for thirteen centuries, defying the Sol-Union and its members. A major player in Apocalypse Eternal, they entered the conflict solely to wage a legal war with its neighbors, Ganymede and Europa. They pioneered the rebirth of DETH (along side Anatali) for use in combat and are considered the Sol System's most dangerous nation.

Europa  —  This Jovian moon was the first outer Sol System terraforming success due to its liquid water (once hidden under an icy shell). Allied with the Sol-Union, Europa's peaceable democracy is the voice of reason among Jupiter's volatile nations and monarchies. Their scientific focus is on the preservation of life and nature. With a moon as beautiful as theirs, it's easy to see why.

Ganymede  —  Jupiter's 7th moon is the largest in the Sol System and an open-air civilization. The Manali's, a fascist matriarchal family, have governed the moon since its settlement a millennium ago. Bitter rivals with its neighboring moon, Io, Ganymede constantly implores the Sol-Union for embargos and permission to attack. It recently underwent a private civil war. Many of its governing family were executed by their cousins and aunts. It's unknown what path the new government will follow with foreign policy.

Callisto  —  Jupiter's 8th moon was the first Galilean Satellite. Its thin atmosphere was enhanced by the moon's ice, terraformed into a breathable, if uncomfortable open-air extension of Mars. The Sol-Union's main Jovian outpost, its focus is regulating outer Sol System industry and mining—blue collar to the core.

Saturn

Hyperion  —  The birthplace of Dethism, Hyperion is a small, rocky moon, 3rd farthest from Saturn. Using the branch system, the colony continually grows from the center, looking much like a snowflake. This religious commune is independent from the Sol-Union and largely ignored.

Iapetus  —  Another moon of Saturn, Iapetus is unique in appearance, having a bright half and a dark half. Fitting, it's inhabited wholly by artificial lifeforms granted emancipation by the Sol-Union. While officially aligned with the federation, they make no effort to interact and ignore all communications from their neighbors. The political and social structure beneath Iapetus' domes is a complete mystery.

Uranus

Miranda  —  A tiny, icy moon of Uranus, Miranda is the ancestral home of one of the Sol-Union's most powerful members, Gloria Heavy Industries. A fortunate survivor of Apocalypse Eternal, Gloria's focus is expansionism, having humanity's largest fleet of orbital colonies, mobile colonies and star stations. Miranda itself attracts little attention.

Titania  —  Largest moon of Uranus, Titania is an open-air colony, home to a union of independent corporations. Dominated by commerce, tourism and gambling, it's much like twentieth century Las Vegas in popularity and depravity. The free-market society constantly recruits colonists, visitors and seasonal employees, harvesting a growing surplus of revenue used to build bigger and better attractions.

Neptune

Proteus  —  Joseph Rahrig, a young entrepreneur, is a successful heir to his father's empire. He personally developed the framework for modern FTLS communications. With strong bloodline ties, Proteus is a political extension of Io, though Rahrig Corp claims complete autonomy from Io and the Sol-Union. In an effort to unify the Sol System, Rahrig Sr. was responsible for the capture of Pluto and Charon around Neptune's orbit in 3511.

Triton  —  Neptune's 2nd and most massive moon was once home to a promising kingdom ruled by a benevolent family. All that changed at the turn of the millennium. After two years and four assassinations of monarchs, the moon collapsed into anarchy between not-so-legal heirs and terrorist groups. If not for the terraformed atmosphere, life would be impossible for those too poor to escape the unending civil struggle. Sol-Union relief shuttles are often attacked. Even when food and medical supplies reach the surface, they're claimed and hoarded by warlords.

Pluto  —  Sad little rock—once a planet, then redesignated a Kuiper Belt Object, and now a moon of Neptune—Pluto's official status has been redefined no less than ten times since it's discovery in 1930. Not that it matters to Pluto. It wasn't even settled until 3511, when it and its own moon, Charon, were diverted into Neptune's orbit. When Charon shattered during a gravitational tug-of-war, Pluto was quickly abandoned. A ghost world of broken domes, this intrepid planet would like nothing more than to be released to its peaceful journey through space.

Interstellar Space

Sedna  —  A Kuiper Belt Object discovered in 2003, Sedna is only slightly smaller than Pluto. Settled by the Sol-Union in 3639, it is humanity's last outpost in the Sol System, though its 10,000 year orbit slowly redirects which destination it's a waypoint to. Considered a drain on resources, resident scientists must constantly find new uses for this cold, lonely colony.

Anatali Station  —  The abbreviated name for Exodus-Class Star Station Anatali. It's the product of a century's design and construction, meant to carry 38 million residents to a series of galactic destinations. The station hosts an unprecedented twelve DETH reactors and makes its journey at just under light speed—an incredible feat for its size and payload. Details about the station's construction, purpose and design can be found here.

Alpha Centauri

Alpha Centauri  —  The closest star system to Earth, Alpha Centauri was the first extra-sol system visited and colonized. The triple-star is devoid of terrestrial mining opportunities and is more of a waypoint than a colony destination. Anatali Station is scheduled to reach Paradise Lost, a Proxima Centauri orbital colony, in 4129.

Paradise Lost  —  The first Star Station to reach and take residence around Alpha Centauri, it's owned and operated by the Sol-Union government with the cooperation of its many nations. Though outdated, it's still a useful outpost to deeper in the galaxy. It circles Alpha Centari C, also known as Proxima, a dim, red dwarf it exploits for hydrogen.

Sirius

Sirius  —  When mentioning the Dog Star and its system, inhospitable comes to mind. It burns much brighter and hotter than our sun, and its companion white dwarf orbits much too close to keep a safe distance. Though close to the Sol System, this was viewed as a dead system—until Gloria Heavy Industries stepped in.

Gloria  —  PGT, the theory of growing a planet. Gloria Heavy Industries is using every tool of colonization and DETH technology to create a home from debris and siphoned solar matter. Thirty years into the experiment, this newborn planet continues to grow around an iron core, dancing between Sirius and its pup. The corporation claims it'll be habitable within a century.

Procyon

Procyon  —  This dying Sol-like star has offered mankind another home, at least for the next million years. Surrounded by a half-dozen rocky planets and gas giants, Sol-Union nations are confident in their ability to scoot hospitable planets away from the slowly expanding star. Orbiting Procyon, Navarin and Valeria are nearing the end of their terraforming, awaiting colonists. While the main star has a twin, Procyon B, the white dwarf's wide orbit makes it a non-threat.

Navarin  —  Big Brother to its Sol-Union neighbor, Valeria, Navarin orbits Procyon and completed its terraforming ten years ago. It has the honor of being the first extra-sol planet to be visited and colonized. The Union's new crop of Exodus-Class Star Stations all cite Navarin as their destination, though it'll be more than a decade before the first full flood of colonists arrive.

Valeria  —  Before Ganymede's revolution, Valeria was their answer to the bad publicity they've received over the centuries. Half Navarin's size, it was terraformed as a nature-loving, resort planet in cooperation with Europa. Now that its parent government has fallen under aggressive rule, it remains to be seen what plans Ganymede has for their new offspring. In any case it'll be open for travel and colonization in 4129.
