Exodus-class Star Station Anatali is known intimately by its residents as Anatali.
After two decades of construction, the station left Earth's orbit on January 20, 4126. Its official passenger manifest stands just over 38 million; though an estimated hundred thousand stowaways were expected at launch.
A pancake stack of self-sufficient metropolises, Anatali has eight districts designated A through H. Two gravity-flipped bulbs join at the center, mirrored halves of a gigantic curved hourglass. Descriptions by pair:
A and H — The main cities, but not the most populous, Districts A and H receive the lion's share of law-enforcement, medical care and social services. Both exist under transparent domes that expose starlight at night and offer clear, blue skies during the day. High rise apartments and skyscrapers create a terrestrial illusion, making Anatali's residents feel they stand on solid ground. Parks, cemeteries, and even sandy beaches support A and H's inhabitants, making their years indoors less stressful, in effect curing travel-dementia.
B and G — Anatali's underworld is the home of working-class colonists and the poor. These rarely windowed districts have only a gray ceiling as their sky, and the most unfortunate residents are forced to live next to the core, a column of DETH reactors running throughout the station. Ignored by ASA and offered little to do but live and wait for colonization, these Districts are filled with idle hands. Crime rates soar, boredom begets depression. Those who pursue a better future live without the security or opportunity to advance.
C and F — As the hourglass thins, these smaller districts are ghost towns of dormant industry. In a few years they'll become chaotic hubs of mining and matter decompiling, but for now their only traffic are maintenance engineers, illegal squatters, and scientists with nowhere else to work.
D and E — Low gravity by default, the top and bottom bulbs of Anatali join at a thin ring between these two districts. Home to star ports and warehouses, all FTLS traffic enters and leaves through here, where their cargo is delivered throughout the station by a network of rail shuttles. This is also the home of the Anatali Defense Force and the Academy's piloting lab.
The size and technology of Anatali Station is made possible through DETH, which not only powers the basic lighting, heating and air, but its transportation network, unprecedented interstellar speed (for its size), and feeds its populous through the use of compilers.
Only two years old, it recently reached halfway to its first destination, Proxima Centauri, and its orbital outpost, Paradise Lost. It's due to arrive late 4129 baring unforeseen complications.
